Legacy Letter #1: When Dreams Don't Come True

Embracing Life's Unscripted Journey: Insights from a Single Mom of Five

"Life doesn't come with a blueprint" goes the old saying; it's a maze of twists, turns, and mysteries. Each of us is crafted uniquely by God, making a one-size-fits-all guide impossible. As a momma of five navigating life's intricate paths, the insights on life, work, love, child-rearing, friendships, healing, and relationships seem boundless. It's an ongoing journey, and the wisdom keeps growing.

My passion? It's to impart a legacy of strength, love, determination, kindness, faith, and compassion to my children and my children's children on down the legacy line. However, my path is not conventional—I'm not just a mother of five but a single mother of five. Initially, I struggled with this label, a deviation from the dream I once envisioned for my life. I had hoped for a different reality where my children experienced a home with both a mother and father in the home.

But dreams don't always align with reality. Yet, if our existence relied solely on fulfilled dreams, we'd perish alongside those dreams. Yet we continue to live. That means there are more dreams that need to be dreamed, reached for and accomplished. When our dreams dissipate or even explode before our eyes, more opportunity presents itself in due time. New dreams are birthed in the same place we mourned the ones that perished. Perished dreams may rise again in different forms. I've heard Oprah say many times, "God can dream a bigger dream for me than I could for myself."

In those moments of shattered dreams, it might seem like there's no light ahead. However, time unveils opportunities we couldn't fathom in the midst of despair. New dreams take shape, sometimes resurrecting elements of our lost aspirations in unpredictable ways. It might not be immediately evident at first, but I believed the elders in my black church growing up when they said, "This too shall pass."

So, this letter, it's a testament to resilience. It's the words I wish someone had left for me—an anchor during tumultuous times, a beacon of hope in the storm. It's a reminder that life's script is often rewritten, and sometimes the most beautiful stories emerge from the unexpected plot twists. Remember, you get to co-author your story with God.

As I navigate this unscripted journey, I've learned invaluable lessons:

1. Resilience Amidst Adversity

Life's trials don't define us; it's our response that shapes our destiny. Being a single mom of five wasn't part of my initial plan, yet it's become a canvas for resilience, teaching me to adapt, overcome, and grow.

2. The Power of New Dreams

When old dreams fade, new ones emerge. Each setback births unforeseen opportunities. Embracing change and evolving dreams is key to discovering uncharted paths to fulfillment.

3. Legacy of Strength and Compassion

My aim is to leave behind a legacy—a legacy of fortitude, love, and kindness. It's in nurturing these virtues in my children that I truly make an impact, shaping future generations.

4. Trusting in the Unseen

Even when dreams shatter, trust in God who dreams better dreams for our lives. He created you—the dreamer. Sometimes, the greatest designs unfold from the debris of shattered dreams. It's the "kintsugi" of our dreams.

The blueprint of life may remain elusive, but within its unpredictability lies a canvas to paint our narratives, carve our legacies, and inspire others. As someone who's walked this path before you, I offer these words as a reminder: Life is a tapestry of resilience, hope, and endless possibilities. Embrace the twists, cherish the turns, and never cease to dream—for it's within the cocoon of shattered dreams that new, magnificent ones take flight.

With legacy love,
